Last week a friend recommended a hair salon to me. The name of the salon was floating around in my head for a few days before I finally got to thinking it was time to get my hair cut. So I sat down at my computer, typed the name and location of the salon into trusty old Google and voila! I found testimonials, maps, and—most importantly—the salon’s very professional and easy to navigate website. They had a full list of service offerings, prices, pictures and prominently displayed contact information. I picked up the phone, called and booked an appointment.

Now imagine if I’d gone online to find the salon and I couldn’t find their website. Or what if I found their site unprofessional or difficult to navigate? They’d have lost my business.

Your website—no matter what industry you’re in—is an increasingly valuable and necessary part of doing business. That’s why it’s so important to build your site with the right strategy in mind.

How To Develop Your Website Marketing Strategy

Our friend (and Mastery client) Cameron Madill, owner of Synotac Web Design, has spent a lot of time working with small business clients on website marketing strategy and has discovered that for most businesses, your strategy will fall into one of the following five categories or “patterns.”

How do you know which strategy is right for you? In this podcast Cameron explains what each of these five strategies is all about, which one might be right for your business and how you can use these strategies to make your site a powerful lead generation and conversion tool. As usual, he also offers a ton of valuable tips that will help you improve your website’s clarity and purpose.

E-myth

“E-myth”.

Sounds like an internet term, doesn’t it? A “myth” about emails, perhaps? No, “E-myth” is about being a business owner.

I read “E-myth Revisited” in 2005. Very profound, life changing and I highly recommend reading it. It’s short and to the point. As a business owner, and you are when you are an independent real estate agent, you have to wear 3 hats.

“Entrepreneur, a Manager, and a Technician:

  • The Entrepreneur creates the Vision.
  • The Manager creates the Systems.
  • The Technician creates the Results.

Each character requires a different hat.”

And “Ultimately, for your business to grow and thrive, you have to settle on the one with the best fit, and pass the others off.” Passing the Managerial Hat

I thought in order to be successful real estate agent, I would need to sew an “S” on my chest and do it all. I felt it was a sign of weakness if I didn’t. I was busy 5:30 am to 11:00 pm (or later) working with buyers, sellers and doing all the office work. Being my own assistant was the most time consuming. I spent valuable time entering clients into my data base, updating listing and property paperwork. I was so busy being busy, I missed opportunities which would have fallen into my lap had I been more focused on my actual business than the busy work.

But I found I LIKED the behind the scenes work of real estate. Oh, I LOVE real estate, but I like the creativity and the nuts and bolts of the industry. I would much rather do the paperwork – but that’s me. So, that’s why I formed my business helping Agents with their businesses.

Which hat do you wear? What hat do you want to wear? You may be trying to do all 3 and this may not be going as well as you hoped. It’s one thing to envision your dreams and goals, but it is another to have the time, energy and resources to implement them. How much time are you spending creating your goals, setting up your systems and all the ad ministerial duties? Do you feel more like a secretary than an professional real estate agent?

It’s okay to pass a task off to another to give yourself more time. It’s not kryptonite and isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s smart business.

Add “E-myth Revisited” to your list of must reads (along with any of Jeffrey Gitomer’s books). It’ll do your business good.
